HOT WOK has been operating in and around Tanjung Tokong district as early as in 1994. After more than a decade's experience in saving Nyonya cuisine, Hot Wok decided to relocate to two adjoining double storey pre-war houses along Jalan Burma, Penang to grace the heritage of the Peranakans (Straits Chinese). Easily accessible, Hot Wok makes an excellent venue for corporate entertaining and dining with the intricate Peranakan decor, burnished marble top tables, sepia furniture and a series of historic photo collections.

Hot Wok’s new concept that is deceptively simple but involves a complex balance of Nyonya food and local hawker favourites has something for every diner to enjoy. In Asia, where the family is both microcosm and the foundation of society, the experience of sharing a meal both unifies and nurtures. Sharing and enjoying a variety of dishes together is the standard practice in Asian households.

Hot Wok not only offers our dining guests traditional Penang Nyonya cuisine such as the timeless Jiu Hoo Char, tasty Gulai Tumis Fish, all time favorite Inche Kabin and the appetizing Assam Prawns, but also provides local delights like the Hokkien Prawn Mee, Assam Laksa and Or Kuih with a delicate blend of many special herbs and spices. You have the options to dine with comfort in the air-conditioned area or the Kopitiam setting while enjoying your legendary Curry Kapitan, Perut Ikan and Assam Prawns. You can even slurp down your favorite Hokkien Prawn Mee with a plate of crispy Roasted Pork, completing your meal with a good old cup of Kopi “O”.

It is also a known fact that every diner will reserve some tummy space for desserts. Do try out our special Cendol (Chilled Green Pea Jelly with Red Kidney Beans, topped with Gula Melaka and Coconut Cream), Sago Nangka (Chilled Sago with Fresh Jackfruit in Coconut Cream) or even our Sago Honeydew. We also have homebrewed Chestnut Cane Juice (Ma Tai Tek Chia) and Nutmeg Juice (Lau Hau) are also available to rejuvenate your body system after a hard day's work.

Over the years, Hot Wok had handled group meals organized by Event Managers, Corporate Companies and Travel Agents locally and abroad. With our proven track record of providing quality food and services, our restaurant has been recognized as one of the best choices in the local market. We have catered for groups of 50 persons on the lower ground up to 70 persons upstairs. Hot Wok is the ideal place for gathering as it is always the place for everyone to satisfy his or her sense of taste. Just tell us what you have in mind and we will wok it right for you!

Local food critics such as Criz Bon Appetite and international travel guides websites such as Concierge and Frommer’s for The New York Times, have consistently reviewed Hot Wok as amongst the rare and good quality dining experiences in Malaysia. Despite the widespread popularity of our cuisine, Hot Wok is still within the affordability level of most people compared to other high priced restaurants in Penang.

Quote from Frommer’s: "This place is the number-one recommended Peranakan restaurant in the city, and small wonder: The food is great and the atmosphere is fabulous. Filled with local treasures such as wooden lattice work, wooden lanterns, carved Peranakan cabinets, tapestries, and carved wood panels, the decor will make you want to just sit back, relax, and take in sights you'd only ever see in a Peranakan home..."

Hot Wok was also awarded Best Restaurant by Malaysian Tatler Magazine in 1998 and 2004 and featured in TVB Hong Kong food channel in 2007.
